More Sandy Bay WA -- photo by Kat NW WA: Out there Ningaloo dreaming... The rewards of marathon driving in WA can be significant... Last week at Sandy Bay, Cape Range National Park, Ningaloo Reef, near Exmouth WA. Wanna know where it is? CLICK HERE FOR THE FULL PICASA PHOTO GALLERY Back on deck again after a couple of weeks of marathon driving from Perth to Exmouth and back again. Grand total of just under 2,600km. WA sure has a lot of open space on tap. Had a couple of good days of kiting in Cape Range National Park, south of Exmouth, but unfortunately, once we left there a cyclone brewed up over Port Headland and tracked down over the Pilbara, stuffing up the weather and subsequently the wind, in conjunction with an offshore High pressure system, whipped up 40 knot easterlies which followed us all the way back to Geraldton, making it impractical to kite and also blowing the surf totally flat. I carried my surfboard with me the entire trip and didn't manage to get a single wave. Must be something of a world record for that part of the world. C'est la vie -- we saw a lot of interesting places even if we didn't get to kite in a lot of the classic spots like Coronation, Geraldton, Shark Bay, and others. It's a beautiful part of the world, even if it is incredibly remote from anything. I was most astounded with my new iPhone which I picked up just before we left. Even though through most of the trip there was no cell phone coverage at all, when we did have any coverage, just 2G, it was like having a mini-laptop with me and I could do most everything except transfer photos from my other cameras. Apple really needs to do something to make it easier to get content onto the phone from external devices. No internal SD slot seems ridiculous. The world of digital imaging has brought some amazing things to the world but when you're travelling the amount of junk you have to drag along nowadays is almost obscene. HOW TO BE SUCCESSFUL WITH WOMEN If you are young and inexperienced with women, learn these key phrases and their meaning now and you will be spared a lifetime of misery. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: If you'd like to enhance your success with women further and become the star of every woman's dream, you need simply to learn the following three phrases and repeat them regularly: (1) "I'm sorry" (2) "Yes honey, you're right" (3) "I love you" So, there you have it. There is much talk about women being "complex", difficult to understand and requiring lots of time for understanding -- it's simply not true. If you understand and abide by the guidelines above your life can be happy and you can spend much more time kitesurfing, surfing, fishing, going out with the boys and doing whatever else rather than sitting at home in the back room wondering why she won't talk to you and preparing for divorce court. SMILES DON'T GET ANY BETTER THAN THIS! IRINA, VERY PLEASED WITH DAY1 Stephanie, off and away! Mel, body dragging at Mach1 Weekend forecast was rather pesimistic from the BOM on Thursday and Friday, but we saw the rain back off by midday on Saturday and a light sou'easter kick in by early afternoon and everyone had a go on the kites. Never seen so many smiles in one place... Saturday evening it was off the the pub for a bit of tucker and then, depending on how much sleep you'd had the night before either off to the sack or party on at the pub. Lot's of dreary eyes turned up at the beach about lunchtime but by early afternoon, almost everyone had a chance to get in the water on a kite for at least a body drag with many of the intermediate group getting up on the boards for the first time. Some bravery awards deserved and if we'd had any medalswe'd have been giving out quite a few. Everyone I saw did spectacularly well and the learning curve was immense with great leaps forward in skills. Everyone who came down seems to have the knack to actually pick it up and get going. All it'll take is more time on the water and some persistence. After about 4pm on Day 2 the wind got too strong to teach so Chris, Arthur, George, Morgan and I hopped on the kites and did a downwinder to the Shoalhaven Surf Club. about 8km down the beach. Kat and Selena drove down to pick us up and drive us back and got some great photos of some whales jumping out the back just before we arrived. Great job girls! Kat has taken quite a few more shots that we'll post later today or tomorrow. Cheers, Rob

More kitecam: ROB'S OTHER KITECAM Selena tells me that the next "KiteChicks Weekend" is shaping up to happen either end of October early November. Last one was apparently a load of fun. If you're interested please let me know and I'll pass your details along to her. Highly recommended to anyone (chicks only of course...) wanting to learn to kite or to improve your skills. Location will probably be at Seven Mile Beach near Geroa, down the South Coast of NSW. A few of us had a bit of fun for a couple hours at Longy last Wednesday. Must have cracked 25 knots at times. Most of the kites up were either 9m or 7m. Unfortunately, surf was pretty much flat so not a lot of wave riding. Best kitecam photos of the day were these: Jan Rob
A few of us had a VERY cold session at Kurnell a few weeks ago.
Last week at Dee Why Spent last weekend on Fraser Island. No prospect of a kite or a surf anywhere on the island. Mostly, it looked like this:
You could imaging an amazing point break working here in the right conditions, but also probably one of the sharkiest places in the known universe... And I can't imagine ever kiting on the lakes anywhere on the Island. Trees too tall for the wind to get in...
But the sunsets and the rainforest were nice...
Watch this YouTube video before you think about surfing or kiting at Stockton again... This is right around the corner from our favourite kitespot at Hawks Nest... For those of us who have kited for a while and remember the previous years it's sort of like this: June: sou'westers-either 20-30 knots or nothing July: Westerlies. 3 knots one moment 33 knots the next and five minutes later 3 knots again. Late July-August: Nor'westerlies, see above for patterns September: Nor'easterlie starting to arrive but usually only enough for a 17-20m kite October: Pick a direction, pick a weather pattern. Who knows. November: Historically the time of the best nor'easters. Plan lots of trips to Port Stephens, Forster, Seal Rocks, Jervis Bay, etc. December: Loads of rain and the occasional nor'easter and southerly now and again, but lots of waiting. January: See December February: See January. Here are some cool shots that Melanie from France took at Long Reef a few weeks ago that I've been too slack to post until now. Great photography. (Canton Beach, Central Coast NSW) Great white shark 'in lake'
http://www.smh.com.au/news/national/great-white-shark-in-lake/2008/07/09/1215282909263.html Tuggerah Lake and, inset, a great white shark. July 9, 2008 - 4:46PM Police issued a warning today after a seven-metre great white shark was reportedly netted and freed in a Central Coast lake. A commercial fisherman reported to police that he netted the monster in waters at a popular school holiday vacation spot at Tuggerah Lake. The fisherman reported snaring the seven-metre shark in nets he had cast off Canton Beach, at the northern end of the lake about 5.30am today. "He claimed that he actually caught the shark in his net and the shark came up and started thrashing about, and hit his boat,'' said Chief Inspector Tim Winmill said. "He said it was bigger than his boat - he's got an 18-foot boat and he said it would have been about 21 feet. "Tuggerah Lakes is only about 12 kilometres long and five kilometres wide. "It's not a big lake but it's a bloody big shark, if it's true.'' The shark was last seen heading south towards the middle of the lake, Chief Inspector Winmill said. Mick Crowe, president of nearby Soldiers Beach Surf Club, expressed surprise there had been reports of a shark in the lake. "That's quite bizarre if that's the case - Canton Beach is only ankle-deep water for the first 150 metres,'' he said. But the Department of Primary Industries and the Fisheries Department both believed the fisherman's claims, Chief Inspector Winmill said. "They believe he's a credible witness, he's been a commercial fisherman for a long time, he's well aware of species of sharks ... they don't have any reason to doubt the truthfulness of his allegation.'' The fisherman would not speak publicly about his encounter with the great white. "He's adamant he doesn't want to speak to any form of media, he's an elderly gentleman who has a mistrust of the media,'' Chief Inspector Winmill said. SURF SESSION LAST WED AT LONGY: Don, Brendon, Adam and I had Long Reef all to ourselves. A a metre and a bit of swell and 35 knot westerlies. Oink oink, woof woof -- Brendon PigDogging for the barrel Sunday a couple weeks ago at Longy was awesome with the wind finally swinging around to the S from about 1pm onwards. Were a few times it went back to a very gusty SW but generally it stayed fully South. About 15 kites up for most of the afternoon with about 15-22 knots. For now you can sit back, relax and work hard until at least Saturday. It's going to be Westerly all week, but with some very interesting long-interval (17 sec) swell arriving on Wednesday so the surf could be really nice for a day or so. Dee Why Point last Monday Tow-ins at Dee Why Point at 10:30 Sunday Arthur, Chris from Poland, Peter and I rocked up to Boat Harbour on Saturday about 11 to find only Tony pumping up. We measured 23-28knots S at the top of the hill but it was gusty and ugly. Never mind. Pete, Mark, Brendon and a few others turned up shortly afterwards and we had a few hours of kiting. Mark even reckons he saw dolphins for 20 minutes but no one else did. (What kind of cigarette was that you were smoking before you went out?) ;-) Pete and I kited out to the reef at Voodoos for a while and found it just too messy and rocky at low tide. Wind speed probably peaked about 36-38 at times and was about the second worst quality wind I've ever kited in but even given that it was still fun nontheless. The new kite designs have changed things considerably over the past couple of years.

Put up my new homemade single line kite for a test Sunday and it works like a charm. Steady as a rock. Will try to get some photos by hanging a camera off it next time. AMAZING the amount of pull this thing has. It's about 1.9m tall by 1.5m wide. Reckon in yesterday's winds of about 12 knots it could have lifted 20kg. If it didn't fly so high in the window you could almost think of kitesurfing with it. This thing pulls like a freight train. ROB'S ROKKAKU KITE TEST FLIGHT
LAST WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON KITE SESSION REPORT: For those lucky enough to be able to escape work committments in the afternoon before dark it was an awesome day of kiting. Wind kicked in about 11:30 and blew right up past dark. I got about around 1:30 and was flying a 9m for the entire time with plenty of power. GREAT TIME. Wind was around 18-22 for most of the time, a bit gusty now and again but best conditions we've had in months around Sydney. I finally had to call it quits after a couple of hours when I started getting leg cramps from all the edging. Some more photos from the kitecam, but as with all new toys, it's always a learning proecess at first. Need to crank up the shutter speed as most of them are a bit laden with movement artefacts. Still, it's a great toy and got loads of potential. Cheers, Rob

And, if you really wanna make yourself depressed, just look at this... Cairns Forecast:
Perhaps I need to remind you: Kitesurfing: Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, involves using a power kite to pull a rider through the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard (which is like a wakeboard). Generaly kiteboarding referes to a style of riding known as free-style or wakestyle where as kitesurfing is more waveriding orientated. These two styles usualy require different boards and specific performance kites. A kitesurfer or kiteboarder uses a board with foot-straps or bindings, combined with the power of a large controllable kite to propel himself and the board across the water. The sport is still in its infancy, but is rapidly growing in popularity. In 2006, the number of kitesurfers has been estimated at around 150,000 to 210,000, with 114,465 inflatable kites sold that same year.[1]

Saturday was quite a bit of fun at Long Reef -- Pete, Brendan and a half dozen of the early birds had a really good early session from about 7am onwards. By the time I turned up around 10:30 it had backed off quite a bit and was dead onshore. Still, it was good fun for a few hours and by about 2pm it had gone less onshore and Jonathan, Sean and I kited down toward Dee Why Point and caught quite a few waves in the head high range before calling it a day. Ran the kitecam again but unfortunately, after crashing the kite in the water once, the focus mechanism jammed and most of the good shots were unreadable. Nothing really of note. Maybe better next time... Love those layover transition carves...
FIRST WIND-POWERED SKYSCRAPER CLICK HERE Funny video: Nice day at Longy for an hour our so last Sunday. Southerly kicked in around noon and we had some fun kiting for a bit before a big storm came blasting through. Got a chance to try out my new Pentax OptioW30 KiteCam and my CamRig today for the second time. First time was a bit of a disaster but now that I've got the hang of it, it's quite cool. BIG welcome back to Big Daz who's kiting again today after about 18 months out of the water due to a nasty kitemare resulting in some nasty injuries. Great to see him back on the water again.
